The new Grant County Public Library building process began with a ballot question on November 2, 1976. The voters answered the question: Shall Grant County provide library services for all the residents of Grant County South Dakota? Proponents stated that the tax costs could be spread out to more people and a county library could provide more services. Also, the current structure was unfit and unsafe for a Library.
With this majority yes vote, the library services went from a city entity to a county entity. The new structure was discussed, planned, and voted on between the Grant County Commissioners and the Library Board of Trustees for more than 2 years before construction could even begin. In September 1977 the Library Board received word that they also had been approved for an Economic Development Grant for a new library building. The general contract was awarded to Davenport and Sorsen and construction could begin.
The Grant County Public Library building was dedicated on November 18, 1979. Updates and upgrades have been completed in the facility throughout the years and it remains a wonderful and integral part of the community. The county residents can be proud of this wonderful facility and the dedicated library staff.
